If your attic isn't properly ventilated, it can cause blistering and buckling in your new asphalt roof's shingles and underlayment. It's a good idea to have your roofing contractors place a ventilation system in the attic prior to the project. You may also need to add new insulation in the attic to control the heat and high humidity inside the room. If you don't make the necessary changes in the attic, your new roof will fail some time after installation. What Happens When the Attic Is Too Hot and Humid? 

If you live in a hot, humid location, it can affect your attic every summer. However, having the right insulation in the attic can protect the room from excessive heat and humidity. But if the insulation isn't sound enough to reflect or block the heat that penetrates through the ceiling, it absorbs it instead.

The heat won't leave the attic once it builds up. It can actually create high humidity. Humid air contains more hot air molecules or water vapor than cool air. The water vapor will eventually settle on the attic's windows as condensation. In addition, the ceiling will become wet with moisture. 

After the contractors install your asphalt roof, the moisture will leave the wet ceiling and penetrate the layer beneath your roof's shingles and cause problems.

What Are Two Problems Your Roof Will Develop?

Even if your roofing contractors use the best materials and resources to install your new roof, the shingles can still blister from a hot and humid attic. Blistering describes asphalt shingles that form bubbles of heat and moisture on a roof. If the sun shines down on the bubbles long enough, they pop open when the heat inside them expands.

Blistering asphalt shingles will blow off when it's windy outdoors, or they can allow rain to penetrate the underlayment. If any of these two things occur, the underlayment can wrinkle in different places. Wrinkling underlayment material can make the shingles buckle or lift up.

Buckling is more expensive to fix because you'll need to remove the roof's shingles to reach the underlayment. If the underlayment is very damaged from rain and moisture, you'll need to have it patched or replaced.

To avoid buckling or blistering in your roofing shingles in the first place, install a better type of insulation in the attic. Your roofing contractors may offer new insulation products, such as perforated heat barriers, to get you started. Or, the contractors may refer you to an insulation specialist for what you need.

In addition, placing a vent system in the attic before your new roof is installed will decrease or eliminate the high humidity and heat in the attic.
