If you want to remodel your bathroom this summer you are going to want to hire a contractor to tackle the project with you. A contractor will be able to take care of all elements of your bathroom remodel, from electrical wiring to plumbing to laying down the flooring and countertops. Before you hire a contractor though, you need a plan for remodeling your bathroom.

Detail #1: Outlets

When you think about remodeling your bathroom, you are probably focused on the big elements, such as what type of flooring you want to install. The little elements are just as important though. One important little element you don't want to overlook are outlets. As you design your bathroom, think about where you would like to add outlets and how many outlets you would like to add to your bathroom.

Do you have an electric toothbrush with a charging stand? Make sure there is an outlet near where you want to place your toothbrush, such as inside your medicine cabinet.

Do you use lots of electrical-based styling equipment, from razors to blow dryers to hair straighteners? Make sure you put outlets in places that make it easy to plug in these items.

Do you ever use the vacuum cleaner in your bathroom? Make sure there is an easy-to-use wall outlet for when you need to plug it in.

Not having enough outlets can take away of the ease of using your bathroom, so be sure to add outlet details to your bathroom plan.

Detail #2: Lights

It can be easy to just go with whatever default light set-up you had before; however, if you do, you are missing out on a real opportunity to transform your bathroom. Having adequate light can really open the space and make it feel more accessible and usable. Don't just go for one overhead light in your bathroom.

Install lights on the wall to provide lighting that illuminates the whole room. Place overhead ceiling insets near the mirror; this will reflect the light and make it the space feel larger. If you like to put on makeup, install vertical fluorescent lights on both sides of the mirror for the best make-up lighting. Is your shower area dark? Add some recess lights over the shower.

Don't assume your contractor knows what you want to be done to your bathroom. Create a plan for remodeling your bathroom and write everything down. Go over the plan verbally with your contractor to make sure you are both on the same page. The more detailed your plan, the more satisfied you are going to be with the final product.
